Having Trouble Getting Our Email Announcements? We Have Solutions!
Some counties and Internet Service Providers have instituted global email filters which are keeping some of our members from receiving the Association's informative email announcements. There are several options you can follow to assure that you will get our email announcements in the future...
- Update your e-newsletter profile and change your county email address in our announcement subscription database to a private home address. Make sure to white list our e-newsletter/announcement service in your spam and bulk mail filters. The address to white list is papgpc@topica.email-publisher.com.
- Subscribe to our RSS news feed to receive our updated content online instantaneously. We have 2 options for you to get our information using RSS news feeds. If you can install software on your computer, we have links to free news readers. If you prefer to have a web-based RSS feed reader, or you do not want to install software or can not because of county network security policies, we have a web-based RSS enabled portal from My Yahoo. Either way we have complete instructions to help you get going fast!
What Are RSS News Feeds? How Do I Use Them?
RSS news content feeds are an alternative way to stay updated automatically with online information without using email. You never even have to give our your email address to subscribe to a RSS feed! RSS stands for Really Simply Syndication, and it's a new technology that is being used widely on the web.
For the Association, RSS can deliver the same content as a newsletter or announcement, but when you subscribe to a RSS feed using a feed reader, links and a small description appear automatically in your RSS feed reader whenever we update the RSS feed. When you see something that interests you, click the link in your RSS feed reader and your are taken directly to the correct Association web page to view the full content online. RSS feeds are not viewable with a browser so you must have a news feed reader/aggregator or use a RSS enabled portal like My Yahoo to view them. RSS will allow us to serve you information immediately when it is posted on the web site without any worries of bulk mail filtering or blocking.
Many web sites are featuring RSS news content feeds. A news feed reader will allow you to follow a large amount of information quickly and easily and never have to share your email address again to get it.
If you already are using Firefox as your browser, there is a simple RSS news feed reader extension called Wizz. If you are using another news aggregator already, our RSS feed address is http://www.capapgpc.org/feed.xml.
Use a RSS Feed Reader -- Installing Free or Trial Software
There are many news readers available on the web as freeware or shareware. Some will even integrate with Microsoft Outlook. If you would like to try out a RSS feed reader, check out some of these great resources.
Can't or Don't Want to Install Software? Use MyYahoo as Your RSS Enabled Web Portal
Open your MyYahoo account at the Yahoo website, visit any site and look for either of these two icons shown on the right.
Once you click on the Add to MyYahoo icon, the RSS feed is automatically added to your personal MyYahoo page. You can add up to 50 feeds.
If you prefer, you can find a feed that you want to follow and look for the RSS XML buttons shown on the left. Right click on the icon and then copy the address from the browser's address bar. Don't worry about the funny code that appears on the page or if a blank page appears, browsers can't read RSS feed language. Then visit this Yahoo page and add your RSS feed in manually.
You can arrange your feeds in any order on your page and then kick back and enjoy. Each time your favorite site updates its RSS feed or blog, your content in MyYahoo will be automatically updated.
Make sure that you add the California State Association of Public Administrators, Public Guardians, and Public Conservators to your new MyYahoo page by clicking the icons shown several paragraphs above!
Entering the world of RSS news feeds has never been easier. We look for other web sites to add this exciting new technology as well in the near future.
